Greenway Ojos Negros by bike

Greenways (Vía Verde in Spanish) are old railway lines all over Spain, which have been reconditioned for cyclists and hikers. It is a highly enjoyable, environmentally friendly and sporty way to discover the countryside of Spain and to get to see more than the typical tourist attractions.

The route of the Greenway Ojos Negros is considered the largest in Spain for its 162 km of route, full of surprises thanks to very diverse landscapes: forest, dry fields and orange or groundnuts. As it is so long, the route has been divided into two sections: the 92km trail that passes through the province of Teruel; and the 70km route that snakes through the provinces of Castellón and Valencia. The route then gradually descends to the Valencian huerta, the agricultural land lining the shores of the Mediterranean sea.

The difficulty of the route depends on which direction you choose to go. If you travel from Teruel towards Valencia the route is downhill whereas the opposite is an ascent that adds up to a total of 1,400m of altitude.

This greenway has been built on the old mining railway route that started from the town of Ojos Negros to get the coal from the mine to the harbor of Sagunto.
